No worries. I just saw you guys were sold out. Believe it or not, cabelas now has their mixers in stock again! Mine will be here Thursday. Crap, I need to order some willies and sure cure in the morning.
If we can find someone with a Weston 44lb mixer to measure the hub, we can put this to rest and help others know what will and will not fit every brand grinder. Options are always good. I didn’t like buying a cabelas mixer but at this point I was getting desperate.

Anybody have a Weston 44lb mixer… parksider. I know u had one once. Did u take it south with you…

Ok. Here is an update and a weird one at that. I happened to pickup a older cabelas non carnivore #12 yesterday. Couldn’t pass it up for the price. $40 anyway, I believe these were made by Weston and look exactly like the butcher series. It couples up perfectly to my new 50 lb cabelas mixer designed for the carnivore series. If this is made by Weston their 44 lb mixer should fit it too. Right?
But popasop measured his Weston 44lber and its hub measures 2”. The cabelas measures 2.5. Scratching head now…
So lesson so far is the older cabelas grinders will fit the new cabelas 50lb mixer and vice versa.

smokinbubba Yeah, we found that it APPEARS as if some manufacturers made changes to their units to prevent them working across lines, trying to force people to buy their line in both grinders and mixers. We are working on our mixers now trying to make some improvement but one thing we will not do is try to make changes so it only works with Walton’s equipment. That seems pointless to me and a good way to make people not happy with you.

That sounds like smart business to me. Cabelas seems to be hit and miss with more miss when it comes to processing equipment in stock. So if we can figure out what manufactures cross fits, others wont have to reinvent the wheel. I spent many hours attempting to determine what fits what and when I think I have it figured out, it takes me back to the drawing board! I would have much rather purchased a Waltons mixer from you guys but at this time we cant determine for sure what fits it other than the Waltons grinder. Having options benefits everyone in my opinion.

Yeah, I think we are basically saying the same thing. Make ours fit with theirs and vice versa. Now, its possible that the idea behind it wasn’t what I am thinking but making something so it only fits your brand seems more apt to cause problems than benefit anyone.

Downside of uniformity is when a change is made it follows across the board (probably a lot of companies using the same manufacturer for some parts)
I have an older Weston 11lb stuffer which has a piston slightly larger than their newer model which is the same as numerous other brands and can’t find gaskets to fit it
I did put some wide rubber bands on it and stretched a new style gasket on the piston and it works pretty good but just another PITA and probably won’t last for a lot of cleaning break downs

glen nice ingenuity there! I once broke an old iPod video and since it was broken I didn’t care what happened to it. I opened it and there was a solder point that was obviously burnt. I touched it with a tip of a small screw driver and it started playing, so I cut off the edge of a dime and taped it there, worked for another year or so. I love broken stuff, it is so much fun to play with and since it is already broken you don’t have to actually know what you are doing!

Jonathon yes, we are on the same page here. My thought is people with older grinders could by a new waltons mixer. More sales for a company that does so much for us sausage geeks. I can tell you no one at cabelas has taught me anything about sausage.

smokinbubba Yeah, Cabelas isnt really a competitor…I guess they are actually, but sausage making/meat processing is a very small portion of what they do and it is basically everything we do! I like Cabelas so I don’t want to think of them as a competitor.!

Jonathon I was looking into buying the Waltons 50lbs mixer after bad experiences with the Weston 44lbs version. However, you mentioned that you guys are looking into changes. Would you reccomend to wait? Also, does the Waltons mixer have less parts? The weston had a lot of small parts that could easily be lost.

smokinbubba I was doing the same research when I bought my mixer and was having a hard time getting any info from the manufacturer about their spline shaft sizes. What I did find though was adapter couplings online so I wasn’t too worried that I wouldn’t be able to get something rigged up if the shaft sizes were different. My backyard butcher grinder ended up matching up to Walton’s 40# mixer though so I didn’t have to use an adapter.

The spline on LEM products seem to be different than cabelas and Weston. The cabelas/Weston are all 3/4” by 6 spline. The problem is with the hub that connects the mixer to the grinder motor. This hub is where the big hand screw threads in to lock the two together or the grinder to the motor. These vary between 2” to 2.5” on the units I have researched.

smokinbubba an adapter shaft would work like an extension and you wouldn’t have to worry about the hub size since they won’t mate anyways. I have a #22 and the grinder throat is a little over 2 inches wide.

I have a Cabellas grinder and I bought the 50lb mixer at BPS to attach to it. I used the mixer for 1 min and 40 seconds before it broke . After looking on line and calling Blue Sky it is a common problem with the way they welded the idle pulley in the gear box . Long story short if you get the 50lb mixer from BPS or cabelas before you use it i would take the gear box off and open it then either weld or JB weld epoxy both sides of the gear box where the idle pulley goes .

smokinbubba Yeah, we found that it APPEARS as if some manufacturers made changes to their units to prevent them working across lines, trying to force people to buy their line in both grinders and mixers. We are working on our mixers now trying to make some improvement but one thing we will not do is try to make changes so it only works with Walton’s equipment. That seems pointless to me and a good way to make people not happy with you.

Jonathon Yep I was really happy when I found my new Waltons 50# mixer will work with my #8 LEM. My son thought he was gonna snag a deal on the LEM since I have the new Waltons #32. Sorry, son.

Grandpa butchered 80 hogs the year he was 80. I buy pork butts to make sausage.
