bocephus only time a mortal man can walk on water, albeit frozen ‘hard’ water. I guess it is like water fountain or bubbler, coke or soda,… I just took it for granted. Lakes are making ice these last few days with the drop in temps.

Up here it is about four months of the year

YooperDog When I lived in MN it was one of the things I always looked forward to, people here in NM don’t believe that you can drive your vehicle right out to your ice house.

bocephus yes some areas up here have ice highways across the lake or bays. Other lakes if the boat landings are plowed open some folks will plow a path if the snow is to deep otherwise they just beat a path down. I am not a big fan of driving on the ice, I have seen a few go down, but I will take an ATV or sled out.

calldoctoday They are calling for most lakes around me at 12 - 20 inches. It will get thicker, I looking forward to the bays along Lake Superior near me to freeze up to get out and get on some bourbot, white fish and lake trout.

I’ve put my diesel truck weighing over 4 ton on a lake here in South central Iowa a couple of times. First time my Gluteus Maximus was ripping the covers off of my seats! LOL

kyle @DennyO if I am on the ice in a vehicle the window is down or the door is open. I just want to be around to explain to my insurance company where they can find it. I know it is done and I have done it in the past, but there is no such thing as safe ice.

After sinking the truck in that thick of ice, I wouldn’t be alive! I could not react quick enough to stay close to the top. Yes I wear an inflatable life vest with enough buoyancy to deal with my wide body , Plus I usually have a floatation suit on.

@dennyo I have a floating outfit and the safety gear to climb out, but it is a long way to anywhere to get help. I have come close a few times on a sled hitting a large spring hole under the snow. It gets your attention as you are sinking faster than you are moving forward.

It is even worse on a moonless night with little to no snow on the completely "BLACK: ice. Those of you that have experienced it, ya know what I’m talking about!

@dennyo A Police Officer and two Firefighters from a neighboring jurisdiction were struck by a car because of black ice 24 years ago on January 12 at about 6 am. It was definitely the worst black ice crash in my career. They had responded to an accident on I-675 caused by black ice. While they were attempting to render aid to victims of the first crash, a driver came through at “normal highway speed”, which was way too fast for the conditions and especially an emergency scene. The driver lost control and killed Officer Kalama instantly, FF O’Toole died after being medivaced by helicopter. FF Arnold was able to return to work after several months of rehab. I was on the Rifle Detail for Officer Kalahan’s funeral. It definitely left an impression about how dangerous that stuff is.
Fast forward to December 16, 2016 The same type situation and one of our officer was on I-75 responding to an accident. He was hit and pinned between his cruiser and a car unable to stop. He lived because another of our officers got to him quick enough to get a tourniquet on his leg, but he lost his leg.
Highways with ice are one of the most dangerous places on earth you can be. Especially that black ice. Stay safe out there.

I’d rather be sit’in in a boat and thinking about God,
Than sit’n in church and thinking about fish’in!
