Thoughts on a used Weston Butcher Series #22

I have the opportunity to buy this off of Craigslist. The only thing is they dropped it. See the damage in the photo. My question is it possible that the driveshaft or whatnot could have been damaged in the drop? They’re asking $450 which seems awfully high for a used/damaged unit. I was thinking about half that. Thoughts? Thanks.

ClaytonD for that type of damage, and coming from craigslist, I would expect at least a 20% discount off the normal price ($500). I’d try to get it though for $300.
I’d look at it like this… Grade it from A (Excellent condition) to D (Fair/Poor condition).
I’d expect A to be 10% off normal, B 20%, C 30%, and D 40%. I’d say this unit is either a C or D rating.–Austin Walton

ClaytonD they are heavy duty enough, Id say it would be hard to really mess up the motor, but I also wouldn’t say it is impossible. I’d want to see it run (just remove the head and grinder plate so you don’t wear that out) and listen then to what it sounds like. Make sure it doesn’t heat up super fast and something is out of alignment, etc. If it sounds fine running, I’d say a good chance it is just superficial.

ClaytonD I’d definitely ask for more of a discount. The damaged unit should get you more than $50 off in my opinion. Since it looks like the fan area is the most affected I would do what Austin says and pay special attention to see if it overheats quickly. It can be a good unit and be damaged for sure and it does look superficial but I don’t think you can really know until you see it running.

My Butcher series #12 showed up like that and one thing you need to look at close is the fan blades. They are only plastic and mine were all busted up and cracked, there were pieces of fan blade in the bottom of the box. Also when the metal fan guard bent, it also bent the end of the shaft. If it were me, I would wait and buy a new one if your only saving $50. The new grinder warranty is worth $50 in my mind
