Grills

Tex_77 We used to carry that model, I never cooked on it but I imagine it works extremely well. Ceramics are nice for their ability to hold heat for long periods of time and how they get seasoned with use. My only issue with them is the length of time to set up and clean, I am always rushing too much to use them!

Jonathon I had the same thought on the cleaning/setup as well. It will take some planning ahead for sure, but I have other grills if I’m in a hurry. I’m told I may have a “grill” problem. Hopefully I will have it cleaned up and ready to cook on this weekend.

Tex_77 What a coincidence. I was accused of having the same problem last weekend. I kind of like the longer process when it comes to any cooking. It keeps me busy and focused!

Joe Hell Joe, that’s not a problem, that’s Choices!! You have your choice on how you want to cook, gas, pellet or charcoal. What kind of flavor are your trying to achieve? You NEVER want to limit yourself.

KansasDad I agree! I don’t think I’m ever looking for one profile. Much of it comes down to what night of the week I am cooking. For weekends it’s all about the smoker or open fire pit. I love charcoal for the flavor and the baby Weber gets used when cooking for one or I really want to sear the crap out of something! The gas grill has so many burners that offset cooking is super simple and it works great for rotisserie. With temps at over 600 it can make quick work of a pizza and the optional deep fryer is often fun!
I’d still like to get an offset smoker and a ceramic grill. I’m as curious about the process and mastering the tool as much as anything! I would really, really like to try my hand at using a La Caja China for pig roasting!

Well I can tell you I’m a big Weber fan. I got the Weber Charcoal Summit instead of the big green egg…i’m not mature enough to own a piece of pottery that big or expensive! For simple go gas, more fun/flavor go charcoal. Most people are in such a hurry and just like the ease of gas. Facebook marketplace or CL is a great place to shop for one!

Parksider I’d like to take a swing a cooking on a Grillworks wood fired grill, they look amazing, check out their instagram…
I’m like Joe Hell, just want to learn the process and master how they work. I’m looking into Asado cooking now. I want to do a venison quarter over a live fire. I love how they hang whole fish/meat/fruit from chains and strings over the fire. Just looks cool!!! Anyone try this before? -

There is nothing more relaxing than watching a glistening piece of meat spinning gently over a fire!
I saw a seemingly well built offset smoker the other day at Walmart with cast iron grates for under $200. I’m tempted to go for that one too. I just picked up a load of apple and cherry wood over the weekend and I’ve got an itch to burn something!

Amen to that. Weber and charcoal all the way. Always has been…Always will be! -
Joe Hell well the grill bug struck again and I had to buy another new to me grill. For $30 it was to good to pass up, $140 in parts and it is good as new! It’s a MHP WNK model.

I’m new on here so just saw the reference to Grillworks grills. I bought my Grillworks Double from Charles Eisendrath the originator of the grills. He was selling from Ann Arbor, Mi address and I went to his farm just west of Boyne City, Mi to pick it up. His son now manufactures them at a facility in Atwood, Mi. They make all sizes and just completed a $250000.00 one for Toronto’s ball team. I’ve used mine for close to 20 yrs.and still looks like new. I like the idea you can start cooking as soon as you lite the kindling. I use small diameter pcs of wood so you have more control of the heat. You need to be in the mindset to get to cooking as you don’t leave the food to bs with the boys or you have burnt food. But don’t expect to buy one now for the price of a big Weber or big Traeger grill. I paid $1500.00 twenty years ago and now I believe they’re over 3 grand. Even so they work fantastic and are great for the person looking to experience cooking over a wood fired grill. -
Tex_77 Nice! I recently spied a decent offset with cast iron grates…I’m close to pulling the trigger! I was not familiar with the MHK but with quick research that seems to be a heck of a grill!
Joe Hell According to their website MHP was in the inventor of the first gas grill. They don’t sell them in big box stores, so I imagine that is why alot of people haven’t heard of them. They are very similar in style and function to BroilMaster grills. I also have a Phoenix grill from MHP that I bought at charity auction some years ago, which very similar to Holland grills.
I plan on cooking on the new one tonight, so I i’ll see how it goes, I know one thing for sure, it gets really hot and heats up fast judging from the burn off I did on it last night.

Tex_77 I’ve been wanting to try cooking directly on top of my charcoal starter chimney over a grate. I’ll have to look for a choice cut at work. We are receiving our beef order from 6Ranch today.
Joe Hell Let me know how you like their beef. I looked at their website and see they raise Corriente cattle. Where I am those cattle are mainly used for rodeo events, and are generally used for hamburger only when processed.

Tex_77 I absolutely love all of their products that I’ve tried. Last night I made a little Carne Asada (Chuck) to top my salad with. I’ve had the ribeye, tenderloin, ground chuck, eye of round and coulotte. I corned 3 briskets last week and an additional 4 this week for the restaurant across the street from the bar. They are going to run a Reuben special next week…I plan to be first in line for that one. Prior to starting my diet I ate a Reuben at each stop during vacation knowing that it would be a couple of years before I had another. Diet goals mean big rewards!
