Drink of Choice

I may date myself, but when we could manage to get beer from the package store, we got Mickey’s Big mouth. The short stubby bottles had a giant pull top. Hawaii had a legal drinking age of 18 at the time, so it wasn’t hard to get beer underage if you were close. We didn’t care to much for the local beer Primo since it was known best for it’s slogan “Hawaiian beer begins with P” and it seemed to live up to it.

glen It got sort of popular as a low dollar one with a higher ABV if I am remembering correctly. This was back a bit & before some of the others if I am remembering correctly. It was not too bad. At the same time of the Tuborg my big deal back then was probably Coors Leaded because we had moved east of the Mississippi & you could not get it unless on base at the commissary, so it was probably more of the “taboo factor” or something like it. My everyday though, you will never want to hear was Carling Black Lable, It was really like drinking water & so cheap, about $2.00 something a 12 pack if I am remembering correctly or was that a case. It was a long time ago.

I remember when I was young and you couldn’t get Coors, the custom combiners would bring back many cases of it and sell it for far more than they paid for it.

bocephus That’s the way it was in Hawaii with Coors, people would have to bring it in with their luggage from the mainland. They could not sell it in stores there. When you would go to the airport you would see cases of it on the baggage carousel, you could bring two case back with you.

glen Coors was a “thing” back in the day because you couldn’t find it east of the mississippi and because it was scarce, like many things, it was sought after.

zbigjeff It was Coors Leaded too as the unleaded version did not exist. I keep thinking that the first unleaded version of anything was Busch & it came out if I remember correctly in the mid to late 70’s. I was a member of the Jacksonville Chapter for Electrical Engineering at the time & for one of our meetings we met at the brewery & they were providing the first samples of whatever it was that was “light”. For the life of me, I cannot remember the meeting subject matter, but I remember everyone thinking & joking the Busch Light or whatever it was, was just “Jacksonville Tap Water”. That was probably about 1978. It stuck never the less. I don’t think the Coors Light came out until after we had moved to Texas in 1980 when I was transferred.

YooperDog Yes, that would have been around the time. It was a thing for a while back then. I don’t know if they make Tuborg or Carling, either one any more. Margaret & I used to go into a little shop in Jacksonville back in the mid to late 70’s called Mr. Dunderbac’s or something like that. She drank a little beer back then. I just liked to try the variety of products they had along with a good Reuben on Jewish Rye. Her favorite was called Kronenburg, from Alsace & it is pretty good. We could not find it for years, but every now & then in my travels & tasting, I find some & bring her back a pack. The call it Kronenburg 1694 or something like that now.

I need to quit all this reminiscing & get back to work so I can get outside 7 get some real work done, before the Sun goes down.

YooperDog Yes, as much as I liked trying the interesting stuff when I could find it or figure out how to afford it, that was probably the reason for the Carling Black Label as well. I also liked Hamm’s pretty much as a go to when I was further out west at times & another one out that way, that I cannot recall. No, I have not tried them all.

glen I seem to recall that as well. There is another bottle of some stuff I have stashed away, more for decoration now. Never opened. It was in a ceramic decanter with a ceramic shot glass of sorts on the top. I cannot recall the name of it right now, so I will have to pull it out & see if anyone remembers it. As interesting as it sounds, the taste was not that good.

glen calldoctoday when I start reminiscing I can start recalling labels; Heilemans for sure Getlemans, Grainbelt… I remember one it cost $5 for a case of 24 bottles called Northern, my buddies and I thought we had a steal. You popped that cap and the room began to smell like a roadkill skunk. I don’t think anyone could ever finish a bottle, but we kept it around just in case.

calldoctoday Yes, it was all leaded until about the time you indicate. But, at 18 I was able to drink it and everything was supposedly 3/2 beer.
