Man I had a great opening morning but now I’m sad. I’m tagged out on bucks and I’m tired. I hope everyone had as good of an opening day as I had. Good luck to everyone and be safe 🙏. 20211120_070352.jpg 20211120_082954.jpg

Not a bad day to start the season. One son caught a buck and doe, another took a buck with one side busted. Would like to see the one he fought with. Another buck took late afternoon but no pic.

Pretty typical of what we see around here. I let a small four point go. Maybe next year.

I was able to take Saturday and Sunday off to go deer hunting. I only had a doe tag but I’m very picky with does. I have passed on many this year. I have also gotten a bit soft hearted as I’ve gotten older. I won’t harvest a doe that has fawns with her anymore. Today I shot one but the bad thing is she was 1.5 miles from the truck in a spot where you have to drag them out. Sleep will come easy tonight and Thank God for a good game cart! It was windy as all get out today too. 15 degrees with 27 mph winds.

ND Mike nice harvest and I’ll bet that cart was worth every penny you paid for it. I can’t force myself to harvest a doe with a fawn. Good job man. Hope you get a buck tag next year.

cdavis yeah this pasture is pretty much all brush. There are some deeper cuts on the far east end that have some trees but it is mostly brush clumps.

cdavis thanks. Me either anymore, I know the fawns will be alright but I still won’t do it. I did it once when I was in my young 20s. I shot a nice doe and her fawn only ran about 20 yards away and stayed there the whole time. Even when I was field dressing. That is when I said nope, not doing this ever again.

bocephus yep she will be good eating. Its kind of strange, she was probably 2 1/2 years old but she was dry. I don’t know if her fawns didn’t stick or what. Her milk bag was pretty much non-existent.

Gotta brag on my 12 year old son. Got his first bowkill ever this morning. He did it by himself cause I was hunting another property. He’s been hunting this buck since October 1st. He passed on alot of smaller bucks waiting for this guy and it paid off. I’m so proud of him to finally show that patience. He did shoot him a little too far back but he only went about 100 yards. I really enjoyed teaching him and my daughter how to follow a blood trail. It was a great day. 20211114_075158.jpg 20211114_081711.jpg

You gotta be proud. It is tough to pass up an opportunity because it is not the one you want. I think it is easier as we get older to make that decision but for a kid I can still remember that feeling. Great to see his success.

ND Mike The only thing it bothers on me is my toes, although I haven’t been up there when it was well below 0 in quite a while. My sister tried to get my Mom and Dad to go south, Dad told her when it is really cold out he stays in. I think I will use that same philosophy

bocephus yep she will be good eating. Its kind of strange, she was probably 2 1/2 years old but she was dry. I don’t know if her fawns didn’t stick or what. Her milk bag was pretty much non-existent.

Nice doe there, ND Mike. Good on you for being selective.
I like to take the older does as well and my reasons are mostly selfish. The old gals are generally smart survivors and have not reached their maturity by making mistakes around hunters. They are usually the watch dogs of the whitetail family groups and most bow hunters will attest to the challenge they present during close encounters. I have had old does come in from up wind on their blind side of where I am sitting in a stand and turn and look right up at me. Its almost supernatural.
No surprise she was dry. Those fawns were probably weaned a while back and are just staying with Mom for the company.

processhead yep they are definitely smart. I shot a doe that was aged by a federal game warden at either 7.5 or 8.5. She was huge too. She weighed 160 lbs field dressed! I shot her with a 50 caliber Thompson Center Renegade at 30 yards.
