Gotta brag on my 12 year old son. Got his first bowkill ever this morning. He did it by himself cause I was hunting another property. He’s been hunting this buck since October 1st. He passed on alot of smaller bucks waiting for this guy and it paid off. I’m so proud of him to finally show that patience. He did shoot him a little too far back but he only went about 100 yards. I really enjoyed teaching him and my daughter how to follow a blood trail. It was a great day. 20211114_075158.jpg 20211114_081711.jpg

      The pay-off.
This afternoon I arrowed this guy. He did me the courtesy of going down within sight of my stand. Since I am colorblind and a poor blood trailer, this really helps out.

I did not weigh him. Just guessing, 225 lbs based on dragging hime a short distance to our UTV.
The older bucks all got big necks around here right now during the middle of the rut.

I skinned and quartered him today. When the meat lugs start filling up, you really see the contrast between the yield from an adult whitetail doe and a mature whitetail buck.

Tomorrow I have hind quarters and shoulders to bone out and package.

ND Mike Thompson makes a great product that I like, but just don’t like the idea of the in-lines. As you indicated, too much like you regular smokeless rifle. I ran across a guy several years ago that made his own, from scratch, flintlocks. I got to shoot a few of them & it was amazing, wonderful. It takes a real craftsman to create all that from scratch & have it work. I have always wanted to get me a Kentucky long rifle in .32 caliber, but have never found it yet. I made some CVA .50 caliber kits a long time ago & really like them, but the .32 would really be nice. I also restored an old Hopkins & Allen 12 gauge a long time ago that was the best shooting little shotgun ever, but I do not shoot it at all any more.

Funny you say that, I was watching the new season of MeatEater on Netflix. One episode they are hunting in Pennsylvania during their flint lock deer season! It’s a 2/3 week season after Christmas every year and any deer is open season. It was pretty neat to watch as they had to do a deer drive to get them moving around.

HerbcoFood shooting a flintlock is so much fun! I’m pretty envious of that flintlock only season that PA has. ND muzzleloader season was intended to be a tradition season only but then Knight muzzleloaders threatened the State with a discriminatory lawsuit and our legislators folded under the pressure and allowed in-lines. I might propose an idea to a legislator to divide our annual muzzloeader tags to half traditional style and half modern in-line. At least then maybe I will get another muzzy tag. Its been 9 years since I’ve had one.

ND Mike I think it’s Wyoming could be Colorado that has a muzzleloader season that also had some pretty rigorous specs on the gun you use. I know of them is open sights.
