A little off the topic, but related. This weekend I was doing chores outside all day and a yearling was hanging out and acting odd, I couldn’t shoo it out of the pond edge. It would just stand there. Mouth was bloody. It was there all day before succumbing to a coyote after dark.

I spoke with KDWP and it is likely to have been EHD or “blue tongue” as it’s often referred to. This is the 4th one the warden has been made aware of within a 10 mile radius. They think there is an outbreak. EHD is transmitted by a midge that has to bite the deer. Breeding grounds for the midge are often related to livestock feeding and CAFO’s. Our regions livestock auction sale barn is right smack dab in the middle of where the infected deer have been reported.

RafterW we had a huge EHD outbreak up here. They offered full refunds in 22 of our units!

ND Mike We are having a bit of a problem here due to the long dry summer. The deer ticks and mites along with the low water levels contributed to the problems. The biologists are saying we should have lower problems after we have our snowpack started and first good hard freeze.

RafterW that is a sad sight. It is interesting that the auction is centrally located to that outbreak. Im sure there is a correlation.

johnsbrewhouse sounds like our summer. We have had a couple of hard freezes already. We were in the teens for lows last night. I’m now worried about a hard winter on the already decimated population in some areas. I’ve seen 1 deer in 2 months around Bismack!

cdavis yeah it is a bit strange to not see deer. Back home in my hunting unit it is good but it will take a few years for a lot of units to come back. I think the best thing that the game and fish could do is shut down the harvest in some units.

ND Mike We have had two hard freezes as well but our coldest was 28 degrees, being close to the coast our temps are a bit more moderate. Our place in the mid mountains sits at 1700 ft and gets colder, but we have had lots of deer. We have a creek that flows year round off the mountains, it got really low, but still had flow, so the animals had fresh water. Lots of cow elk and does which need a permit, only one is given for the hunting unit each year and I haven’t ever been lucky enough to get one. Most of the blue tongue is east of the mountains where is was hot and drier and a lot more fires this year.

ND Mike Need reduction around me. I just saw an 8 pointer and 3 doe out my back door. The highways are riddled with deer accidents. Want some?
