ND Mike If we have to use a hitch hauler we wrap in a tarp and get it where we can hang it. Both to protect the prized meat and to respect other peoples views.
bocephus yep! We do the same. I feel awful about something my brother and I did when we were young hunters. It was the first time hunting without Dad. I was 17 and my brother was 15. He shot a huge doe after school one day. We were hunting in a 1981 Plymouth Horizon…hahahaha! We slung the deer over the hood and he held two legs and I held the other two legs. We went into town to brag to Dad that we could get it done without him. I will never forget the look of pure disdain and disgust that a group of elderly women gave us. I have never done anything like that since! I tell this story to the kids I teach in Hunter’s Education as what NOT to do!!!

You guys that are involved in hunter education all know the emphasis placed on hunter ethics and encouraging the kids to be proud of being hunters, yet respectful of non-hunters.

processhead yep. I spend a lot of time talking about ethics and stressing that hunting is much more than harvesting an animal. Anyone can harvest an animal. The way you go about it and treat that animal is what makes you a hunter and not just someone who kills things.

We sell a bunch of that. Tried one of them. Very good!

processhead When I used to hang mine in the barn for a few days, they were always skinned, sometimes mesh bagged, but always cooled down quick before hanging & field dressed immediately & I mean immediately, after the kill. I always thought that made all the difference in the world s back then, hardly anyone I knew did that.
calldoctoday you always must get the heat out of the animal to avoid spoilage

Deer and warm weather. I haven’t even been out yet. My son decided to go out last Saturday morning. Got himself a nice little 4 point. He text me when he left the woods, met at his place and a hour and a half later it was in the freezer. 70 deg out when we finished. Warmest deer I’ve ever processed. Barely into rigor. On the plus side, the hide came off real easy.

PapaSop It’s fun when it’s in upper 80’s with bugs all over the place because you have the lights on to see.

A few year back I had to process one harvested in 90° temps. Fastest processing I have ever done. Field conditions, got it on ice in little over an hour, spent the next hour pulling thorns and sand burrs from my hide. Nothing easier than pulling off a fresh hide.
