Last week I bought a cabelas carnivore #22 1hp grinder to replace my old hillbilly belt pulley model. Reason I bought it instead of the Walton is I really want a reverse feature when I add a mixer to it.
Now to the problem… cabelas is out of stock Everywhere. Rumor has it that they are yet again changing suppliers/manufacturers of the mixer. They are currently made/imported? By blue sky here in Ohio. I have emailed them with no reply.
Does anyone know if another manufacturer has a compatible mixer? The shaft is 3/4” 6 spline
I’m jonesin for a batch of Bambi dogs and refuse to crank the handle on my manual mixer after it took two trips to the bone crusher to get my bad shoulder good again!

Will LEM’s 50 lb meat mixer match up?

I have a Bass pro shop gift card and was wanting to buy a grinder, hearing this is not good
… wonder if Waltons would accept the BPS card as payment on a #22… 😉

If u require reverse, cabelas may be the only option.

Before I found Meatgistics, I gathered bits of knowledge randomly around forums and ended up getting a LEMS Big Bite #32. Love it, dang near grinds faster then I can feed it. I use the wrap around ice pack that cabela’s sells, on it, and couldn’t be happier. Doesn’t have a reverse though.

What purpose does the reverse serve in the meat grinder?
As far as the mixer is concerned, I would think a strong rubber scraper and the foot peddle switch might achieve as much or more in the mixing process.
Does the reversing motor add much to the cost of the machine when it is new?

                  Denny,
The reverse is mostly for the mixer in my case. The reverse feature would be handy to clear connective tissue or sinew when it clogs around the knife and plate area. I doubt I ever have that problem with the #22 cabelas unit. It is a beast.
As to the mixer, I have a LEM 20lb manual mixer now and when I do smaller batches (10lb), I find the meat moves to the sides and center of the mixer, missing the paddles completely unless I turn the handle backwards for an equal amount of turns. In a perfect world, there would be a 25lb mixer that will couple to the carnivore grinder. That way, I could do 10lb batches and still get a proper mix. This is why I may end up building a gearbox for my 20lb LEM and adding a splined shaft to couple with the carnivore. I rarely do batches larger than 15-20lb.
Ad to the cost to adding a reversing switch or reversible motor, I doubt either would add much to the cost of production.

smokinbubba So…we are partly to blame for this apparently. Weston used to recommend that you use the reverse function when you mix but then made some changes years ago, never told anyone and started saying “don’t run your reverse for more than a few seconds” we finally saw this and asked them what was going on and they responded that the mixers no longer require reverse. They can all be done in one direction…ok, would have been good to know! So, I tried to go through and put youtube cards/footnotes on videos where we say to the unit in reverse but Im sure I missed a few.

Whats the od of the head hooku without the head of the unit attached? I am guessing it will not, ours fits weston but weston doesn’t fit ours sadly. They made the head hookup too small.

I will measure when I get home. If the grinder motor bore size is the only issue, that would be a simple fix with a fab’ed bushing if the motor hub is larger than the mixer hub.
Is the drive shaft 3/4"x 6spline?

I think the issue with the mixer needing reverse is when smaller batches are placed in the mixer. Reverse helps bring the mix back into the paddle path. At least on my manual LEM mixer.

smokinbubba Yeah, from a hookup standpoint that is correct a 3/4" 6 spline. Now, even if it fits I’ll point out it isn’t what it is designed for but Im sure we’d take a return on it from you.

So if I have this correct, both the 50lb tilting and the weston 44lb mixer are 3/4"x6 spline shaft but the diameter of the attaching hub are different sizes? I was under the impression that the shafts were different. I just saw your meat mixer maintenance video and the 44lb weston appears to have a 3/4"x 6spline shaft as well. Things are becoming clear now! Im betting one of the mixers you sell WILL fit a cabelas grinder. I understand they are not made to fit other mfg grinders and will most likely void any warranty but I think most of us are not too worried about that. Good equipment requires no warranty!

UPDATE: The cabelas “Hub” measures exactly 2.5" in diameter.

No worries. I just saw you guys were sold out. Believe it or not, cabelas now has their mixers in stock again! Mine will be here Thursday. Crap, I need to order some willies and sure cure in the morning.
If we can find someone with a Weston 44lb mixer to measure the hub, we can put this to rest and help others know what will and will not fit every brand grinder. Options are always good. I didn’t like buying a cabelas mixer but at this point I was getting desperate.

Anybody have a Weston 44lb mixer… parksider. I know u had one once. Did u take it south with you…

Thx papa. Same as the Walton. Wonder why they don’t interchange…

Ok. Here is an update and a weird one at that. I happened to pickup a older cabelas non carnivore #12 yesterday. Couldn’t pass it up for the price. $40 anyway, I believe these were made by Weston and look exactly like the butcher series. It couples up perfectly to my new 50 lb cabelas mixer designed for the carnivore series. If this is made by Weston their 44 lb mixer should fit it too. Right?
But popasop measured his Weston 44lber and its hub measures 2”. The cabelas measures 2.5. Scratching head now…
So lesson so far is the older cabelas grinders will fit the new cabelas 50lb mixer and vice versa.

smokinbubba Yeah, we found that it APPEARS as if some manufacturers made changes to their units to prevent them working across lines, trying to force people to buy their line in both grinders and mixers. We are working on our mixers now trying to make some improvement but one thing we will not do is try to make changes so it only works with Walton’s equipment. That seems pointless to me and a good way to make people not happy with you.
