calldoctoday what can I say I am cheap and got tired of paying for it. Actually the wife’s relatives had their own maple syrup business and we could buy it dirt cheap, but had to return the jars. Their kids didn’t want to continue the business so I learned how to do it. Just don’t like the store made kind.

YooperDog I am with you 110%. If I had the ability to make my own & especially grow the trees too, I probably would not care for any store bought either. That must be amazing to even try some home grown maple surple.

YooperDog That Ice Fishing sounds good too. I always wanted to go & was on assignment up your way or so about 20 years ago or so & a guy was going to take me out on the ice. Then I got a new assignment in Oklahoma all of the sudden & had to head for Oklahoma & never made it Ice Fishing. Tried some summer fishing though a few times in July both times(it was about 60 degrees) a long, long time ago & that was really good. I caught a big old Pike, toothy son of a gun. But what I really liked was the Walleye. Then I was up there more recently & they were selling Walleye in the grocery store. I was surprised.

calldoctoday with this cold weather and little snow the ice is getting thick, I want 4" minimum. I like pike pickled, they are a boney one, but also good fried up. Nothing beats fresh walleye, but I find it hard to decide between trout, salmon or walleye. Best part of ice fishing is the peace and quiet.

calldoctoday looks like you have been busy. I did about a gallon of Turkey broth recently and I thought that was a lot. I have finally been lucky enough to find some lids, so now that you got me motivated I will have to get off my duff and get going so I can get out and do some ice fishing.

Chef still a rare find, but I know what I need for sugar season and have them put aside plus a b/u %. I use what remains to ration out to my canning projects. I try not to be a hoarder but sometimes you need what you need.🤔

calldoctoday I have to keep an extended supply available. I can all of our maple syrup or turn it into sugar. But I have learned that if I see them, I better get them. I have plenty of jars, if folks don’t return the jar they are off the list. Helps keep the cost down. LOL

Funny you should say that…I just ordered another couple of cases of 500ML bottles for the upcoming season. Got me thinking about all the bottles I didnt get back yet from last spring.
Figured I better start getting my syrup stuff ahead of the rush and garden stuff is getting ordered just after Xmas.

deanlorensen I used to just give them away, then started realizing that I was going through a lot of jars and jugs. I got tired of running around to get more supplies, then folks started just to expect it. After that, no jar, no syrup. You would be surprised how many jars I get now. Might have to implement a new kid policy

craigrice Can try a longer bake time and lower temperature. Can also add some instant potatoes. The potato starch should help. Is this a yeast bread or baking soda/powder? that would make a difference in cures as well.

Pro tip, invest in a couple drill augers to vastly reduce the time and effort it takes to plant a garden. You’ll be thanking me once you do.

Rabbit manure is the best manure in my opinion. It has the high nitrogen with out the burning ammonia. I used to raise the rabbits really for the manure. Now we just use our chicken, compost, chicken straw & Alfalfa, & some cow manure from a local dairy. I get rabbit when I can. Margaret says, “no more raising rabbits”. If this corona business keeps up, we might have to get back to the basics.

calldoctoday Are you doing the large turnips or the small ones? Over in Leanon and Turkey they pickle the small turnips. I had them on the best Donairs ever made. Then again Turkey is the berth place of donairs. They make good toppings on falafals as well.

Joseph 0 Whew, that was a long time ago. Although, I would like to do some again these days. Our turnips I would say were the small to medium ones. Definitely not the big ones like some of those big giant turnips & rutabagas I have seen. That sounds real interesting & tasty too. I like that stuff.

Tex_77 I bought the tractor to manage other things on the property, and did not buy the tiller until about a year later, but man does the tiller work great. What took me about 2 hours with a walk behind tiller, literally takes about 10 minutes. Not to mention saving the body aches.I

Tex_77 let me know how the no till goes. I’ve only done it on food plots for deer.
