Smoker modification

processhead I spent last night and this morning researching on how PID controllers work. I’m thinking that the values you set on the smoker you sold may not work with my “Rube Goldberg” contraption.
Do you think I should reset to factory defaults and then start manually adjusting? First start with the proportional and then the integral values. Will I even have to mess with the derivative value?
I think your observations and plan make sense.
I would start by resetting to the default values. Then make sure that the default temp sensor type matches the one you have.
Next, I would set the Proportional Band (P) to a fairly low value like 1 or 2 and see if you get acceptable control without too much overshoot or undershoot of the temperature.
I would leave I and D alone for the present.Also, you may need to check the temperature sensor (PV) reading against a known accurate thermometer. Sometimes you need to calibrate the PV reading to get an accurate reading. There should be a setting to allow moving the PV reading up or down a few degrees to get it to match the actual temperature. Easiest way is to put the sensor tip in boiling water since you know that will be 210 to 212 degrees depending on the elevation of where you live.

processhead thank you. Trouble now is that the power cord has a GFCI and today it won’t reset.

Its not uncommon for heating elements to develop some leakage between the inner resistive element and the outer metal encasement, which is grounded.
Test if that is the problem by disconnecting the element inside the smoker and see if it still trips the GFCI.
Sometimes you can plug the element into a non GFCI source and get it good and hot, which cooks out any moisture inside that creates the leakage path.
If it is bad enough though, even that won’t work and you need to replace the element.

processhead GFCI won’t reset without anything plugged into the controller. There’s a fuse in the controller and I checked the continuity and it’s fine. Looks like I’ll have to send it back.

I bought it from Amazon because I could get it quick and it was a complete unit already wired. I’m going to return it for a refund and UPS will pick it up Monday. I was a little surprised when I unpacked it by the GFCI on the power cord plug. I suppose this is to try to limit their liability.
Looks like I’m going to start from scratch now and assemble my own. Any suggestions on a particular brand and what additional components I’ll need? I’m thinking I’ll need some type of project box, a ssr relay, a sensor and a power cord. I don’t want to disconnect the plug on the smoker to wire it. I want to be able to plug the smoker into the box so that I can bring the controller inside when not in use. The smoker stays outside on my deck with a cover on it.

I used an Inkbird PID in an enclosure.For a little more money, Auber sells a PID controller with programmable temperature steps. Pretty interesting and I might go that route for my next build.

The more expensive one has a USB connection so you can program steps with a laptop and save different programs.Both of them offer an option for a self contained 10 amp/1200 watt relay which should be adequate for my 700 watt element. What type of sensor would you recommend? They have a 4 inch K that is recommended for smoker ovens.

A type K thermocouple is usually a good choice. I try to find one that is easy to mount in the project I am working on.

A type K thermocouple is usually a good choice. I try to find one that is easy to mount in the project I am working on.
