calldoctoday yep for sure. Things that you normally don’t see you remember. I’ve come across wolves and a black bear in Northern MN. Those are memories that don’t fade.

ND Mike I saw a black bear this year from my stand, didn’t get my camera fast enough to get a picture. We have gotten pictures on some of our trail cams though. How has your deer hunt gone so far? We ended with three, weather didn’t cooperate this year.

bocephus I have only got to hunt 3 days so far. The weather was too nice those days. I am off today but the wind is gusting 60 mph so I am staying home. I did get a call from my Dad last night. He went and sat in an abandoned farm yard and harvested his buck. He was pretty excited when he called. I’m proud of him. He is 71 and still gets it done. He did have to call my youngest brother to help him load it in the pickup. Here is a pic of him with the deer and his youngest granddaughter.

processhead thanks. I’m glad he filled his tag. With our deer populations you are not guaranteed a tag every year anymore. Especially if you put in for a buck tag. Sometimes you can go 4 years or more without a buck tag. When I was younger it was a 100% guarantee. Times have changed for sure.

What are the things impacting the deer population in your area?
We had an EHD outbreak that temporarily set us back about 10+ years ago, but our herd numbers are back and whitetail permits are plentiful. I think mule deer permits are still somewhat limited.

ND Mike Give him my congratulations, I am of the opinion that every deer is a prize. Nothing wrong with getting help loading, I am sure it is just the start of paying back all the years of him helping his sons. I was always happy to help my dad as it meant he was still out there with us.

ND Mike You have more winds coming as well, we just started clearing up here in Washington and was cold this morning. Lots of new snow on Mt. Rainier this morning. The rivers and streams are starting to recede and the sun is out so you have something to look forward to in a couple of days as far a sunshine coming.

processhead it is a combination of things. We had record number in the early 2000s. You could get as many extra doe tags as you wanted. The Game and Fish aggressively tried to reduce numbers. They did and then the winters of 2008-2011 decimated the deer herds. As of late we have had 2 bad years for EHD outbreaks. Kind of a perfect storm of bad things.

calldoctoday They got flood bad up north of here near the Canadian boarder. I have a couple of friends the live near Bellingham that one was flooded out of his home and another where she was stuck in hers for a day and a half until the river waters receded. The problem with the friend that was flooded out, he has three kids and has COVID on top of that. They were worried this morning about a town called Sumas, it borders Canada and the river is having a problem in Canada along with a major pump station going down, so they were on evacuation stand-by orders. I went over the river by my house this morning to get my labs done, it’s high, but not at flood stage anymore. I has two power dams upstream and on large lake reservoir. As long as the freezing levels stay low, we should not get any snow run-off from the mountains again. They had 14" of rain in less than a week at Mt. Rainier, not snow, rain last week. they got snow the last two days and the freezing level was low. We had 27 degrees this morning.

Fun evening last night with deer up close and culminating with a nice big doe coming in for a shot to let me fill my antler-less bonus tag. This little buck came in and hung around my stand for a bout 5 minutes while I snapped some pictures.
The doe ran about 70 yards and painted a colorful trail that even this color blind old guy could follow. Went back this morning and even found my arrow she had run off with before going down.
Apologies to anyone who finds this a bit graphic.
