Week and a half before the deer opener in MN, getting things ready to go. My wife said I was like a kid at Christmas and I can’t disagree. Get together with my brothers and this year a brother in law and nephew. Brothers have been hunting together for 50 years, every once and a while something got in the way for one of us, but now we all make it.

bocephus Know the feeling. Heading for some pig’s and such with my brothers. Looking forward to spending time together. Maybe next year we can have another couple be able to join us. Schedules always getting in the way during the fall, fishing in the spring seems to work out better. It is great getting together and now adding a kid or two as things progress, making memories.

cdavis yeah, I’d love some crappie. The problem with white and black crappie is that they are very prolific. They would eat really well for a bit and over breed, which stunts their growth. It would be the same problem I’m having with the bluegill. There is a hybrid variety that can be found at certain fish farms, which are mostly sterile. About 40 of them in my pond would be perfect. The problem is that the closest farm to me that I’ve been able to find them at is not close at all…Little Rock, AR.

Over the weekend I was practicing my fly-casting (beginner). Every cast I’d catch bluegill like this one and slightly bigger from my pond. No trophies here but at least I was catching something. I now know I have a thick breeding population of bluegill with no predatory fish in my pond. It’s a small pond so it’s going to be tough to manage but I think a handful of bass would do it some good.

calldoctoday very true. fisheries management is a delicate dance, especially with a small pond. As a fun project, I might have 6 rainbow trout stocked in it this fall and try to catch them through the spring. The water will eventually warm to the point that they won’t survive, even being spring fed, but it would be something different to try to catch for around our part of the world.

craigrice I think my longest on assignment stints were three months, but there may have been one or two longer. Most averaged around a month. I am slowing down a lot, but still at it. Most of them are more like a day or so now, with just a few week or more. I understand.

It takes commitment, understanding, patience, communication, hard work, respect and trust from both committed parties to make it happen. Boy I just kept thinking of more things to add to that list. I think we all know now that there will always be challenges, but working together helps share the load and how lucky we are to have chosen those who stand beside us.

RON PARRISH there is an elk ranch in the New Paris, Ohio area. They sell vac sealed meat. Its kind if pricey, but it would give you a chance to try it if your up to the drive. I believe the name is Quiet Harmony Elk ranch.
