Small Business Shipping

Are their any small business member that ship their products? I have never shipped my products until recently, and I can’t believe how much it cost to ship product. $38 to ship from Texas to Washington is just out of line for a $20 product.
Just wanted to know how small businesses handle this. I would appreciate any input. Thanks

We have an accounts with Most shippers. It is a pretty significant discount over standard rates. We only ship a couple items a week so it isn’t based on huge volume. Most shippers are much cheaper if you have your own account. Then if you do volume the discounts get deeper.

All you really need is a scale and a tape measure.
We ship a lot of goods. My observations:
For light weight items under a 1 lb. we use USPS First Class Mail. Usually costs $3.00 - $5.00 anywhere in the US.USPS Flat Rate shipping can be a good value for heavy dense items. If it fits in the box, they will ship it.
If you have a Pay pal account you can purchase discounted shipping through them and print your own shipping labels so you just drop off packages and aren’t standing in line at the P.O.
For larger, heavier items, shipping with FedEx Home Delivery is the most cost effect for us. Open an account with FedEx and create your own shipping labels. Again, just drop off at a FedEx location or one of the many third party businesses like Walgreens that accept drop offs.

Like Processhead said, just a normal scale and a tape measure. You will round up to the nearest pound. You can print the labels on regular printer and tape it to the box. UPS will give you self adhesive labels that print in a regular printer if you want them. If you don’t ship a lot, easier to just print on regular paper and tape to box.

processhead outstanding points, also i will add that with the USPS you have in addition to the flat rate boxes, plain priority mail and regional boxes that are cheaper for states in your area. These products come with free boxes which can help lower cost. You can order the boxes on USPS.com at no charge or get them at your local PO, but the selection will be much better online. Your local PO might even give you some priority tape, but that seems to vary from office to office, but it never hurts to ask.

Chef I usually use USPS priority mail if it fits in their box. I find that they do a better job than FedEx and UPS most of the time. You just can’t depend on the 2 or 3 day delivery times , but it’s close.
