In a lot of ways, a dehydrator is just a smoker without the smoke. A dehydrator is more about air flow than high temperature heating.

What I can tell you is this, I make my jerky using ground meat and a jerky gun (my gun also came with an attachment for snack stix’s) the reason for this is I can make 9 trays of jerky made with ground meat in about 6 hours time. I have also made whole muscle jerky in my dehydrator but you are looking at about 12-16 hrs. and it can take longer if you don’t rotate your drying trays, with the ground meat it is “SET IT AND FORGET IT”

There used to be only two companies that made them. Our first one was a GE and a pile so we stepped up and bought the Jenn-Aire 10 years ago with all the bells and whistles. Of course we have not used the indoor grill or gridle but once, so it was a waste to buy them, but love that we can remove the inserts so if one of the ceran top elements burn out, you can replace the cartridge.

Come to find out to make things worse it was an expensive high dollar hunk of junk apparently to start with. Finding 40" ovens these days is even worse. Apparently, there are some good ones out there, but very expensive & most dual fuel rather than electric & I cannot afford to do that again right now. Some of the oven can work good & ours also did, when it worked.

We had been using the old Farberware countertop convection oven I bought my wife back in the early 80s. It still looks great, but a temp controller went out on it a few years ago & finally found that part & now something else went out on it, I think just an element, but having trouble finding that now too & parts have gotten pricey on some things. I probably need to get her a new one now. We use the smoker for peppers, jerky, etc. & it works great for those things, but it would not work too well for fruits & veggies I don’t think.

Mine are the 9 tray model # on their Excalibur’s site is 3926TB it has a 26 hour timer, and a thermostat on top as well. It is very affordable and IT GET’S THE JOB DONE!!! I have dried fruit, made granola, I do all my jerky & beef sticks on it (much quicker) I use a jerky gun and you can make 9 trays of jerky in about 6 hours, I also make my dog treats on it. I will tell you this I bought mine off of E Bay and saved about $125.00 on each machine, Excalibur’s web site is pretty pricy. You can also buy replacement screen inserts, etc. for the machine on E Bay at a much cheaper price. These dehydrator’s are the best I have ever owned nothing digital, or fancy, it simply does what it is suppose to do. Hope this helps you out!!!
