There are special labeling rules for blended seasonings that are different for “food” items like cake mix.

Dumb question, the gov forces companies to put the % of salt , calories, nutritional facts, etc on food, marinades, hot sauces, cakes mixes … why are seasonings excluded?

Good question. I think the answer is because the packaged seasonings are an ingredient for the end user to use to make a finished product and not an actual finished product.

As such, it is up to the end user to determine how much of it goes in the finished product so nutritional information per serving of the finished product is an unknown.

That’s my theory.

I get it when it comes to how much and what other seasonings you might add to a blend, but I don’t particularly abide by keeping salt and sugar content secret. Even Coca-Cola discloses that.

Pivodog We’ve asked if Excalibur could give more details about salt and sugar content in their blends, but they seem to be pretty tight-lipped when it comes to that sort of thing. Unfortunate.

Yes, it is unfortunate but totally understandable.
Proprietary seasoning formulations is what gives a company like Excalibur a competitive edge.

Granted, everyone has salt and sugar in their seasonings.

Jonathan do you know if there’s a certain percentage of salt that’s supposed to be in a cured product or is it seasoning based? I’d imagine chemically speaking a certain percentage is required for good protein extraction, ect…

processhead when looking at the product on Walton’s website scroll down and click on additional info, and it will show a list of the ingredients, and/or what other additives are needed to make the product.

Thanks Tex_77. I had seen the ingredient list before and of the products I checked, they all showed flavoring ingredients, but no non flavoring additives.

It just left me wondering if that ingredient list was all-inclusive, or if other additives might be included in the formula but not shown.
