The bad news is that the PVC pipe only sits in there because of a knob on the side of the PVC, not that it sits there on its own. I should be trying this in the next few days.

I bought some 3" (ID) PVC piping and cut it down to 3/4" in width. Some good news, the opening are tapered and with a 3" PVC pipe the outside diameter is wide enough that it gets trapped in the bottom of the cavity, so you insert stays in when you slide it open. The downside is also that the cavity is tapered so it is very hard to accurately measure how thick to cut them. I havent tested these yet but I am expecting a mess on my hands as I think the cavity will fill up and then it will go out and over the top as the insert doesnt reach all the way to the top. For anyone who is going to try this I’d suggest starting at just about 3/4" light. I am going to use my Miter Saw at home to try to make a perfectly straight cut. I was using a sawsall and a hand-held band saw and getting a perfectly straight cut was difficult.

Also, make sure you file the edges to get rid of any plastic bits…yeah, fair warning, youre probably gonna end up eating some PVC if you di it this way!

If anyone is wanting to try what jehatha is talking about you can also do it with PolyTubing and freeze that and cut with a saw. It’s what a lot of commercial processors do when they dont have a patty machine.

Then puts plastic wrap in one half and fills with sausage and wraps the plastic wrap over it and then the top half of PVC and clamps. Into the freezer for a few hours then cuts with his slicer. Just another idea.

That angle will actually help keep it in place as you dispense the patties. I have a friend with a cnc capable of pumping these out in either wood or plastic!

If you do try to cut out part of a cutting board make sure you get an angle to the edges as the cavities are angled.

I don’t know why but I never even considered that, I just went straight to overthinking the solution and blew right past the easiest one.

You wouldn’t have to move it from side to side if you made to plus it is a friction fit then it isn’t going to come out with the patties. If I get time I’ll try to make something and post pictures. I’m a wood worker and fairly certain I could come up with something that’ll work. The only reason I haven’t yet is because my wife prefers the breakfast sausage in bags instead of links and she can hand form patties if we want them.

Pretty sure that’d be the easiest way to make it work, at least in my mind I think it would. Worth a try.

The plexiglass would hold it in place. A ‘doughnut’ of wood or cutting board material should work just fine. If you wanted to get fancy a machine shop could make something too.
