Looking for suggestions on how to insulate my Masterbuilt XL propane smoker. I got a needle valve regulator on it and want to smoke when we process near St. Louis and the cold really affects the time. I have a smoke tube so I can give up the smoke part, and I can give up the racks since I’ll hang almost everything. Wanting to insulate it, and can give up the window, since I don’t open it anyway until temp is reached.

Guess I’m not sure why you want to insulate it. I’m guessing St. Louis can’t be much colder than my locale. Have been using the same smoker for the last 1 1/2 years. Are you looking for a lower temp? I can get mine as low as 125 deg and will hold that temp +/- 2 deg the entire time. I have also used this through out the winter months in Wi with no issues(except for that -14 period, that sucked). I also quit the chip tray and went with the A-Maze-N pellet tube. Smoking does seem to take a little longer in the cold but that’s just more time for cold beverages…

I built a plywood box around it with a top just big enough to clear the smoker by a couple inches.The front panel was just propped up for easy access to the smoker. By doing this it creates a warm atmosphere around the smoker from it’s own heat. Worked out great.
